CHAPTER 22

____________________

Fedic and AldSanni spent the day at the bunker in that first city, once the sub-space radio had been set up. It was a good idea to stay underground while the occasional groundship cruised by overhead. The Recon Maiden had been left in the middle of a nearby boulevard, but it camouflaged itself to match its surroundings. Fedic doubted it would attract the attention of the Invark.

The next two visits, to other cities, went just as well. Fedic began to feel confidant in the organisational skills of the Lyceum brothers. Perhaps it was part of a personality that studied a wide range of things. Whatever the reason, the evacuation from Uruk, some time in the future, looked more and more likely to run smoothly.

AldSanni had been so impressed with the Lyceum brothers that he decided to stay on until the evacuation, and help with the work that was still to be done. The old commander, PraktuParBrahmad, could see the advantages in having a government representative as the resistance leader, and AldSanni’s change of plan was welcome.

After one more trip to a nearby bunker, travelling at night, Fedic knew that his job was almost done. The remaining radios would be transferred from bunker to bunker until all of Uruk was covered. The bunkers with good stores of food or supplies would then be able to smuggle them to bunkers that had need, and the few independent outposts that remained would be brought into the network in various ways.

The last thing that remained for Fedic to do was transfer AldSanni back to Ba’Regan. After that he thought he might hide out in RockHaven while he found a way to get off the planet. If the Sumerians at RockHaven were prepared to take the risk, they could use the Recon Maiden as part of the resistance when he was gone.

The last trip began with a faint silver glow creeping across the eastern horizon. It was clear the small Uruk moon was close to showing its face, and would be putting in an appearance in the next day or two. It had become a moon no more than a few millennia ago, captured from an elliptical orbit most likely, and it orbited the planet fast enough to chase the dawn as the world turned. It was a race that it slowly won over time. The moon had been below the horizon while the Recon Maiden was busy on its trips to nearby bunkers, and that had been a blessing.

Fedic lifted off in the early hours of darkness, and had AldSanni back at Ba’Regan well before midnight. Once the two of them were safely inside in the bunker once again, the Lyceum brothers took the opportunity to thank him for his help with the sub-space radios, and wish him well for his trip off the planet.

It was something Fedic appreciated, but he left them after a short time to gather his few belongings, and prepare for the trip back to RockHaven. He took a
